Coupled stress-suction changes in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone

چکیده
Some (saturated) claystones, considered as host rocks for deep radioactive waste disposal, are sensitive to drying and wetting. Wetting may result in swelling damage during the resaturation of specimens mechanical testing. Given that, due evaporation, have lost some pore water coring, transport, storage trimming prior lab testing, it is required re-saturate them by reinjecting evaporated content, compressing space under constant or using a combination both. It important characterize hydromechanical processes involving suction changes total stress loading order adapt preparation methods minimize sample disturbances. We present novel experimental setup test claystone isotropic compression at while measuring suction, we discuss data three testedat different initial suctions degrees saturation. Interestingly, path followed (decreased) vs (increased) confining diagram was observed be close Gens-Alonso “Neutral Line” (a line inclined 45° suction/mean diagram, illustrating similar effects both variables). In other words, even saturated conditions, resulted comparable suction. The obtained indicate that applying 12.2 MPa keeps material on compressive side Neutral Line, limiting swelling-induced disturbance.

Oedometric compression and swelling behaviour of the Callovo-Oxfordian argillite
The Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) argillite is a possible host rock for radioactive waste disposal in which the ANDRA underground laboratory of Bure (East of France) has been excavated. In this paper some aspects of the volume change behaviour of the COx argillite are investigated. To do so, high pressure oedometers with a maximum capacity of 113 MPa have been used. In a first stage, swelling tests w...

متن کاملPreferred Orientations and Anisotropy in Shales: Callovo-oxfordian Shale (france) and Opalinus Clay (switzerland)
Anisotropy in clay-rich sedimentary rocks is receiving increasing attention. Seismic anisotropy is essential in the prospecting for petroleum deposits. Anisotropy of diffusion has become relevant for environmental contaminants, including nuclear waste. In both cases, the orientation of component minerals is a critical ingredient and, largely because of small grain size and poor crystallinity, t...
